Sprucing up Spruce St. Park
July, 2008
Volunteers were at the Spruce St. park during the month of July, scraping and painting the benches. As you can see in the 'before' and 'after' pictures, they needed work and they got it. A big thanks to Weicker's Home Improvement, Spruce & Cherry St., Tamaqua for the paint. It made a difference.

Spruce Street Park
Saturday, May 17, 2008
Several volunteers spent several hours at the Spruce Street Park, and made a difference. Much more needs to be done, though, and we're hoping to see more volunteers. We expect to schedule another "Spruce Up" there as the benches still need to be done, along with some garden work in the planters around the trees.

South Ward's First Annual Spruce Up campaign
May 15, 2008
The South Ward Neighborhood Committee will kick off its "First Annual Spruce Up" Campaign on May 17 at the Hunter/Spruce Street parking lots. Volunteers will meet at the lot at 8 a.m. in an effort to make the lot more attractive. Future plans for the lot include improved lighting, landscaping and paving. Rain date will be May 24.
The Spruce Up Campaign is designed to encourage residents and business owners to take responsibility for keeping their individual properties well maintained and free of litter. Similar to Downtown Tamaqua's Golden Broom Award, a panel of volunteers will be awarding monthly prizes and certifcates to the resident / business taking the best overall care of their property. This will include litter pick up, sidewalk sweeping and anything designed to "spruce up" the property. Individuals or their neighbors / family members are encouraged to nominate properties by calling (570) 668-4804 or submit your nomination online.

Carriage Street Pedestrian Stairway
The Carriage Street Pedestrian Stairway will be an all-metal modern stairway connecting 'lower' Spruce Street with Van Gelder and Nescopec Streets.
It will be replacing an all-wooden stairway that is thought to have been removed sometime in the 1980's. Does anyone know for certain when it was removed? Does anyone have any photos of the old stairway? Send me the details.
